There is so much going on, we have our first crop of blackberries and the amazing rocambole garlic is hanging in the barns to slowly air dry. The chickens are out and about and the clover meadows are greener than ever thanks to our new irrigation system. Our Washington State Department of Agriculture organic inspector just came through and we are making a list of berries we have planted over the last three years. Obviously, it will take a while to have a bumper harvest of these, but we have sampled a little bit and the taste is just amazing.

Berries we planted include Blueberries (seven varieties, to see which ones grow best in this extreme climate here in the Cascade Mountains), large and juicy Blackberries, Black Currants, White Currants, Red Currants, Gooseberries, Sea Buckthorn Berries, Aronia Berries, Goumi Berries, Goji Berries, Arctic Kiwi.

Trees we planted include Sugar Maple (we plan to have the first Organic Maple Syrup in about five years or so), European Hazelnut, PawPaw (George Washington’s favorite fruit, a taste somewhere between Mango, Pineapple and Banana), Quince (for making Jelly) and Persimmons.

We will have some Organically grown Rhubarb also, the taste is amazing and we made our first Rhubarb Pie, delicious.

Our herbs include Garlic, Horseradish, Sage and we have a large patch of Persian Mint as well, the mint tea from these leaves is fantastic.

Photos of our plants will populate the posts, please come back often to take a tour and share in the joy of organic small family farming!!
